Kitchen Survival Strategy

I have heard many young people going to college for the first time say, "I don't know a thing about fixing food. I do well to boil water." How many young marrieds are in the same boat?  If they haven't had much experience in the kitchen growing up, it may be a survival experience those first few years until they figure out who does what.
In days past, it was up to the woman to do all the cooking, baking, canning, and such. In this generation, however, it is not unnatural for the man to be the head cook and baker. Many couples manage quite well this way. Others have found they have their niches to fill, and each one does their part to make the meal work.

Then there are the single-again's.

Those who have lost a spouse for whatever reason may find themselves having to survive in the kitchen. Making a simple meal may seem like a major obstacle. The planning, the buying, the cooking time, the technique - all take knowledge and practice to make a good meal.
With so many fast shortcuts in the supermarket and microwaves, it is easy to overcome mealtime obstacles. You can find food to eat - but is it good or nutritious?  It is always better to make a meal from scratch with real ingredients if at all possible that you know are not chemically enhanced.
How do you pick good fruit or vegetables? How do you know what kind of potatoes are best? How do you find a ripe melon? How do you know if food has gone bad? How long can you keep leftovers in the frig?
These questions and more are the reason for this blog - to help you become a survivor in your kitchen and to help you with questions you may have in navigating that new area in the home. You may not become a super chef, but you will find tips and hints to help you plan, buy, cook, and make a great meal.

Please feel free to comment on your experience, ask questions, or post answers to questions.
